He died a day later probably due to brain damage from lack of oxygen. One case I heard: If the lungs are full of water then the air is not going to go in. CPR itself may help with adults because of the strong pressure on the chest moving water out of the lungs and into the mouth.
CPR does not help move it out to any degree. The chest compressions are solely to keep blood circulating to the brain and other organs.
